2 February 2000 No. 1
From the Head of Junior School
Welcome to a new school year! Our first week has passed extremely smoothly and I congratulate the staff and boys for this wonderful start. To our new members of the school community, I extend a special welcome to the Scotch Family and trust you all enjoy a long association with our great school.
Parents may have noticed two new faces amongst the staff and it gives me great pleasure in welcoming Miss Larissa Raymond to Year One and Miss Sally Laity to our Office. Both members of staff have already made a wonderful start to their careers at Scotch and I look forward to the many contributions they both will make.
Congratulations are extended to Christopher Robson (6I) who was appointed School Captain at Speech Night last year. I wish Christopher well for his challenging year of leadership. Other positions of leadership will be appointed later in the term.
Congratulations are also extended to the Deputy, Mr Rod Carson, and his wife, Samantha, on the safe arrival of our first enrolment for 2005, Brent Carson. Best wishes are extended to the newest member of the Scotch Family.
Many parents query why class teachers are not made known before the end of a school year. This is often not possible due to some staff seeking promotional positions in other schools and, as such, placement is often not finalised until very close to Christmas.
I am however, pleased to advise parents of our staff for 2000.

Thank you to the many Year Six parents who attended the Information Evening last night. We were pleased to welcome the Principal, Dr Donaldson, and I hope that parents found the information presented of great value.
Information Evenings for all other year levels are scheduled for next week and I encourage parents to attend in order to hear about the expectations of their son's teacher. As much media attention has been focussed on "Bullying" over the past few weeks, I will outline Scotch's policy, informing parents of our procedures and indeed, expectations.
Parents and boys of the Junior Primary area may be sharing our frustrations over the incomplete "new" playground that was scheduled to be ready for the start of this year. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we still await its completion. However, I am hopeful that it will be ready before the end of term.
I urge parents to extend patience and consideration in Callantina Road when dropping off and collecting boys. Traffic congestion is an ongoing difficulty and relies heavily on drivers obeying the traffic regulations which are in place. I have attached to this Newsletter a letter from the Boroondara Council and urge parents to read it carefully. Please note that it is unacceptable to park in the driveways opposite the school, as our neighbours are often blocked in unfairly. Your cooperation is sought and appreciated.
Boys leaving or arriving at school outside of normal hours are asked to report to the office with the person collecting or dropping them off, and enter the details in our "Absentee Book". This record enables us to monitor when boys are away from their normal classes.
Under no circumstances will boys be permitted to leave the school outside of normal hours without direct supervision from a responsible adult and without permission from the Head of Junior School.
My theme for the first week has been "Friendliness" and boys were reminded that...
"If you want a friend, then be a friend!"
Boys were encouraged to look out for their friends, to share their time, ideas, feelings and importantly, themselves. Being friendly means caring and doing things for others without being asked and is the best cure for loneliness.
The Bible tells us.... "A faithful friend is the medicine of life."
I wish all members of our school community a wonderful year and look forward to the many activities that will be remembered as the Year 2000.

Junior School Parents' Association
On behalf of the Junior School Parents' Association Committee, I would like to welcome all parents, old and new, as members of the Parents' Association, and wish them and their sons a happy and successful year. Our particular congratulations to this year's captain, Christopher Robson.
Your committee this year consists of myself, Alice Chan, Jane Sinclair, Lian Lokon, Helen Worth, Felicity Browne, Belinda Carmichael, Amanda Derham, Sandra Dick, Joan Fowles, Gabriella Goldsmith, Carol Totterdell, Jo Wormald and Gladys Yu
Between us we represent most year levels in the school. Please feel free to contact any of us (via the office if you don't know us personally) if you have any concerns or ideas you'd like to bring to our attention.
Most of you will have attended welcome morning teas by now; the next events are the year level social evenings.
Junior School will not be holding a ball this year. Instead we will be apart of the Club 150 Ball, on 16 June 2000, to launch the school's 150th anniversary celebrations. All parents will receive an invitation in due course, but if you would like to start organising a table, please contact me on 9819 1870.
A reminder to Years 5 and 6 parents about the morning tea on Tuesday, 8 February, commencing from student drop off time in the Boykett Room, located at The Cardinal Pavilion.
I look forward to meeting you all during the course of the year.

Art News
All boys are commencing the year in Art with self portraits. These portraits are being executed in different mediums for each class. The Assembly Hall will be filled with self portraits of the boys, and I trust you will be able to find your son's artwork when you attend the Information Evenings. It is most interesting to see the development Art skills when these portraits are all displayed in one place.
All boys will then participate in a painting and drawing programme often based on class themes. Later in February, Year 6 boys will attend an Educational Tour of the National Gallery of Victoria on Russell Street, where the Gallery has moved while the renovations are taking place at the St. Kilda Road site. This temporary Gallery has a selected collection of the great art works of our National Gallery.
Thank you to all parents who are sending materials to the Art room. I am collecting egg cartons, ice-cream and margarine containers, old Christmas cards, old calendars with paintings on them and sea shells. Boys will be given house points when they bring materials to the Art room.

PARKING OR PICKING UP AND SETTING DOWN CHILDREN IN THE VICINITY OF SCHOOLS AND SCHOOL CROSSINGS.
For the safety of our school children, residents are reminded to take care and obey parking signs in the vicinity of our schools. Illegally parked cars create traffic congestion which leads to an unsafe environment, due to impatient and frustrated drivers carrying out unsafe and often dangerous manoeuvres.
In order to prevent this, Council Local Laws Officers carry out regular patrols and motorists detected breaking the parking regulations risk being fined (penalties up to $100.00).
Remember, as soon as you stop to let your children in or out of the car, you are deemed to be parked. You do not have to leave your car or turn the engine off to be booked.
At school crossings, you must remain stationary at the stop line while any person (including an adult or the supervisor) is on the crossing or the stop sign is displayed. Do not let your child alight at this time. Ensure they wait until you are safely and legally parked. All areas in the vicinity of schools are clearly sign posted and it is the driver's responsibility to ensure they are parked in compliance with the relevant signs.
If you do not comply with the parking regulations the Local Laws Officer who is monitoring the crossing will usually record your registration number and details (usually with the aid of a video camera for evidentiary purposes) and the infringement will be posted to you within the next three days.
So please, let's make sure you and all our school children are safe. If your child needs assistance with a heavy bag or you need to go into the school for any reason please make sure you allow extra time and park in a zone which gives you sufficient time to do this. Parking zones which give extra time are usually a few minutes walk further away.
