SATURDAY 14 OCTOBER - JUNIOR SCHOOL SPORTS DAY |
6 October 2000 No. 28From the Head of Junior SchoolA very warm welcome back to all boys and families. If your household was anything like ours, then considerable exercise is now required to burn off the extra energy stored from watching too much of the Olympics, if that is possible! The final term for 2000 is set to be extremely busy and Christmas tidings will be on us all too quickly. So, fasten all seatbelts and get set for a fast ride to the end of the year. A special welcome is extended to Mrs Jane Beams, who joins the Access Unit team. Mrs Beams replaces Mrs Harris who has commenced her maternity leave. Already Mrs Beams has made a wonderful impact with the boys and I look forward to the many contributions she will make over the next 12 months. At the end of last term, Mrs Edmanson, who is currently on maternity leave, advised me of her intention to resign from teaching in order to attend to her young son. Whilst we are disappointed to be losing a wonderful teacher, I know Mrs Edmanson is looking forward greatly to spending some time in the very important role of being a mum and I wish her well for a wonderful future. With this news, I am pleased to advise that Miss Colaneri has accepted my offer of continuing in her role in the PE Department. At the end of last term, Waller House presented a wonderful Chapel service and were unintentionally omitted from my 'thank you' list. I extend congratulations (with my apologies) to Mr Murdoch and the boys of Waller for their efforts in presenting a memorable service of worship. On Monday I was pleased to present badges to boys who will complete the role of Class Captain for the term. Congratulations boys This week, has seen the completion of the House Public Speaking Competitions. Whilst the results and a report can be found later in the Newsletter, I congratulate all Year Three to Six boys for their efforts. Congratulations boys: Congratulations are extended to Herr Clarke who has been awarded a scholarship to study in Germany next January. The scholarship has been awarded by the Goethe Institute and focuses on the teaching of German in the Primary School. I remind parents that next Saturday is the annual Junior School Sports Day and that this is a compulsory school day for all boys. Boys from Prep to Year 2 are required from 10.20am until 11.45am and boys in Years 3 to 6 will be required from 8.45am until 1.00pm This is a wonderful family day, with members of the JSPA and the teaching staff having completed an enormous amount of work in order to make this day a success. Further details can be found elsewhere in this newsletter and I look forward to seeing all members of our Junior School family in attendance. My thanks to the many parents who volunteered so quickly to be a host family for boys who will visit from St Peter's College, Adelaide in a couple of weeks. The response has made our job so much easier and we look forward to an exciting musical exchange. Stay tuned for more details! My theme for this week has been based around focussing on doing the best that each boy can do, regardless of what curriculum or extra curricular activity is being undertaken. We saw so many athletes throughout the Olympic Games achieving personal bests, and whilst many of these efforts were not rewarded with medals, they were rewarded with the intrinsic knowledge of knowing that they could do no better. This is what I have encouraged every boy to focus on this term - working towards achieving their personal best, regardless of how it compares to others. As teachers and parents, we can ask no more of the boys, and the boys should expect no less of themselves. In the words of world marathon swimmer and world record holder, Shelly Taylor-Smith, I challenge every boy to "Go for it!" My thought for the week: One must learn by doing the thing, for though you think you know it,you have no certainty until you try. Aristotle Guy B MasonMusic DepartmentThank you so much to all those people who have volunteered to billet boys from St Peter's College in Adelaide. The response has been great. Further details regarding the tour will be forwarded to host families as soon as they are available. Ms Jenni Allen - Head of Junior School Music Year Two Maths ProgrammeDuring Term Three the Year Two boys once again participated in a hands-on activity maths programme. This programme was a huge success and would not have been possible without the ongoing commitment from the parents. We would like to thank Jay Hurley, Sue Monkhouse, Margaret McDonough, Lindy Hickman, Janine Jones, Jackie Ryan, Sue Duffy and Vicki Finlay. The Year Two staff and boys sincerely thank you for all your time and help. Ms Chris Carney - Year Two Teacher JSPAWelcome to Term Four. Sports Day is coming up and you should have received your notice (via your son's school bags) asking for help on the day at one of the stalls. I hope many of you are able to help, as it is a lot of fun and a great way to meet other parents. Today you will also receive your 'cake kit' as we ask you to donate an item for the cake stall on Sports Day. You will notice that, due to Health Department regulations, we are required this year to ask you to put your name to your cake. Your cake (or biscuit/slice/preserve) will not be sold with your name displayed. We only need your name in the unlikely scenario that there is a health problem later. I would like to particularly thank everyone who helped to assemble and distribute the cake kits. It is a big job and we could not manage it without extra help. Our last function for the year, the JSPA Tennis Day, will be held on Friday, 27 October at Scotch with a delicious lunch in the Cardinal Pavillion. Mums and dads of all levels of ability are welcome (weekday commitments allowing of course). Notices are out today. Mrs Susan Hughes - President, JSPA Sports DepartmentSports Day is here again, Saturday 14 October commencing at 9.00am, finishing at 1.00pm. They meet every second week in either the Ramsay Room or After Care Room. Many issues have been raised from the classroom meetings and the class representatives have presented these at each SRC meeting. These issues are then discussed and voted on by the representatives to see if they should be proposed to Mr Mason. The SRC discusses each point with the view of ,'Is it what the school really wants? Or, 'Is it what the school really needs?' House Public SpeakingThe Interhouse Public Speaking Final concluded on Wednesday 3 October for Years Three and Four and on Thursday 5 October for Years Five and Six. We congratulate the participants of each level. Bike Education To commence the Bike Education Programme all the boys in Year 4 saw a perfomance by Bruce Hargraves called "Riding through Time". Bruce talked about the history of bicycles and how they have changed over the years. Also he talked about rules and cycling hints. From Monday 9 October to Friday, 13 October, 4D will be participating in a Bike Education Programme. Each day the boys will progress through a series of riding tasks and ride for one and a half hours. On Friday they will participate in an assessment task and also enjoy a long bike ride through the school grounds. All boys in 4D are to bring their bikes to school on Monday, 9 October. The bikes are to remain at school until Friday 13 October. If you are unable to take the bike home on Friday, please let us know so the bikes can be locked away for the weekend. Prior to the commencement of the programme, all the boys' bikes will receive a safety check by Clint from the Melbourne Bicycle Centre. Also, on Friday 13 October at 8.50am, Clint will show the boys in 4D how to mend a puncture, change a bike tyre and some basic repairs for their bikes. The Bike Education programme for 4L will be held from 16 to 20 October. All boys in 4L will have a bike talk with Clint on Wednesday 18 October at 8.50am. The Bike Education programme for 4W will be held from 23 to 27 October. All the boys in 4W will have a bike talk with Clint on Wednesday 25 at 8.50am.
