Torch What a night to remember at the opening of The James Forbes Academy!

The building resounded with music and song as teachers, parents and guests mingled in the rooms and corridors.

The formal ceremony lasted forty-five minutes after which Professor Warren Bebbington, the Ormond Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Music, University of Melbourne, opened the Academy. His speech, like that of the Principal, Dr Gordon Donaldson, highlighted the importance of music and drama in the development of young men.

Mr Michael Robinson, Chairman of Council in his address invited all attending to look at the flood-lit buildings of the school and remind themselves that they and their predecessors were responsible for providing these wonderful facilities.

Director of Music, John Ferguson also gave a gracious address. He observed that buildings do not make a music school, rather it is the talented student musicians and their teachers who will ensure a successful future for the Academy.

Many Scotch families made generous donations toward building the Academy. I am sure they must feel an immense sense of pride when they admire this magnificent complex.

It is also important to mention the spectacular painting on the far wall of the main hall. The Scotch Family Association donated $6,000 and with the assistance of Chris Taylor, Head of Art at Scotch, commissioned Mexican artist Christian Borrego, a recent Scotch artist-in-resident, to paint two abstract panels depicting the Barrier Reef.

Chris was able to purchase Belgian linen and send it to Mexico, where Christian built two large two by three metre frames on which to mount the linen. After completing the painting, he sent it back in time for the opening ceremony. The vibrant blue, green and orange shapes resemble meteors in space. Sound waves appear to emanate from them, most appropriate for a School of Music.

The strong cultural dimension now provided by The James Forbes Academy enhances a school already so well equipped in other areas.

House and Form Athletics and Family Day on Saturday, 12 October is fast approaching and I hope parents are able to offer their generous assistance again this year. The various stalls and activities all require your support to ensure a successful day.
