Scotch Success Stories

Jeonghyun Kim Jeonghyun Kim of Year 12 flew to Brisbane on 25 July to compete in the National Final of the Rostrum Voice of Youth Public Speaking Competition. He had progressed through the regional final held at Scotch College in May and the state final held in June at Wesley College. The national final was held in the Queensland Performing Arts Centre on the prepared topic "The Technological Revolution", where he argued that the real revolution needs to be in people's minds. He also delivered an impromptu speech entitled "Daring to be Different", where he discussed American culture.

The Rostrum Voice of Youth Competition has been running since 1979 and Jeonghyun is only the second Victorian to have won the Senior title. He collected $300, an individual trophy, and the Kep Enderby Perpetual Shield, which will be on display at the School for the year. Luke Stokes recently won a school's photographic competition for a digital print series. This work was chosen from 200 competitors to be displayed in the National Photography Exhibition which is touring all Australian capital cities.

Nickola Josevski Nikola Josevski recently represented Australia in an under 18 international water polo tournament and travelled with the team through Europe, playing a series of international fixtures.

Alistair Leitch Alistair Leitch will represent Victoria in the national equestrian event, the Prince Philip Mounted Games, in September.

Christopher Newnham Jonathan Newnham entered the Australian Physics Olympiad Qualifying examination in August last year. He obtained the top Victorian result, and was invited to the national training school held in Canberra in January.

Troy Sandley He was then selected for the Australian team to compete in the Asian Physics Olympiad in Bangkok, where he won one of the team's two silver medals. Troy Sandley is presently in Florida, USA with the U18 Victorian State Basketball team. James Wark represented Victoria in the Nation Rugby Union championships and was selected to the combined states team.

Peter Earle (centre)

Peter Earle At the recent Scotch College Foundation's Presidents Dinner David Earle announced the creation of the Peter Francis Earle Award, named after his youngest son who was killed so tragically earlier this year. The award will be given to a student at the School who, while not necessarily excelling at his studies, shows determination and achievement through hard work and the ability to listen and take advice. This Award represents the very qualities which made Peter such a popular and respected boy at Scotch and will do much to commemorate his personality and personal achievements. The School is indeed grateful to David and his family for providing this wonderful example of Endowment in Action.
