Lin Jiang left Scotch early at the conclusion of Year 11 last year in order to take up a scholarship at the College of the Arts, and to avoid losing valuable practice time in doing VCE! He is recognised as one of the finest horn players (and many say the finest) of his generation in Australia, and the confidence that many people have in his ability was amply rewarded during the Melbourne International Brass Festival. Lin was one of five outstanding tertiary performers selected from around Australia to perform in a Master Class with the legendary horn player Barry Tuckwell. Lin was the final performer, and performed the 1st Movement of the fiendishly difficult Second Horn Concerto by Richard Strauss. Having worked with Lin for many years as an orchestral player, chamber music player and concerto soloist, I was thrilled to see this fine young player acquit himself with such aplomb in such august company. Lin intends to do one more year in Melbourne before moving to Europe where he hopes to study with Hector McDonald in Vienna. It seems very likely that his will be a name to look out for as he becomes more established in the demanding world of professional classical music.
