Jazz cabaret at Scotch

Early in Term 4, jazz will come alive again as the Cardinal Pavilion swings into gear with the sounds of the Show Band and this year's guest stars, jazz diva Shelley Scown and her Quartet.

Don Burrows

Since its inception in 1996, audiences have enjoyed a laid-back cabaret-style evening of superb jazz.

With a dance-floor that is usually filled to capacity, it has also been a great opportunity for both current and past parents to catch up with friends around candle-lit tables.

In past years, guest artists have included the legendary Don Burrows and pianist Kevin Hunt, along with some bands containing some of Melbourne's top jazz musicians. Then of course there were one or two conga lines formed to the music of the great Latin Doctors.

Shelley Scown

This year, vocalist Shelley Scown and her Quartet will perform. Shelley has performed for the past 14 years with pianist Paul Grabowsky and also with Sydney saxophonist, Bernie McGann, The Groovematics and Kate Ceberano at various times.

She has numerous recordings to her credit including Grabowsky's "The Moon and You" and her own "Angel".

She will be jointed by Bob Venier, one of Australia's great trumpet stylists, Tim Stephens (piano), Nick Hayward (bass) and Alan Browne (drums).

The Show Band, under Messrs Roger Schmidli and Andrew Mott, is busy building up their repertoire with the swinging numbers of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton and some Latin influences of Tito Puente.

The Jazz Cabaret is on Saturday, 16 October at 7.30 p.m., Cardinal Pavilion.

Tickets are $20 per head. Tables of up to 10 are available and may be booked through Sue Rawson in the Music School on 9810 4219.
