The Annual Family Day exhibition of student design work was highly successful this year. A wide range of work was displayed and many visitors and parents were most complimentary about the quality and range of work.
In particular, the Year 12 work for the Unit 3/4 course was most impressive for our guests. The work ranged from Joshua Henderson's television room sofa in suede to Alistair Chapman's king-size bed in ash and amoora, to Mark Foletta's simply stunning colonial sideboard in fiddle back red gum. Mark used wood cut from his family farm 'Yin Barun' near Benalla on the Broken River.
The story goes that his Dad was felling a tree for a small farm bridge twenty five years ago and the sawmiller noted the fine narrow fiddle back feature. He said it was too prized a wood to use for the bridge, so it was sawn and set aside for the future. Mark has used it to make a gun case, a jewellery box and now this impressive piece. The door panel insets are boards from the old woolshed on the property, so it really is furniture with a family connection.
Jacob Walter designed and made a large set of speakers in beech, which were put to good use on the day entertaining us with background music. Michael Downing's games table was notable for its clever fold-away glass stands with leather inserts. Casey Phua's small child's reading chair in chrome and beech shone brilliantly under the spotlights, and Edward Beaurepaire's use of left over granite from a new kitchen was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater house.
