Program

Art lessons in the Junior Art Studio begin in Prep and all boys attend classes for 70 minutes per cycle.  Two-dimensional and three-dimensional media and techniques are explored during sessions.  Areas such as textiles, pottery, painting, printing, drawing, collage and construction (using media such as paper maché and modroc) are often integrated around a theme or concept being explored within the classroom.

Art Club is an extra class that runs during lunchtime on the second day of the cycle. All students (in years one to six) are welcome to participate.  It is a voluntary activity time where students can continue working on their art pieces or choose to create an individual project outside classes. All boys working in the studio are expected to wear an Art smock, at all times, so their school uniform is protected from the products used in sessions.

While working in the studio, boys are encouraged to:
•    enjoy activities and develop their confidence using a variety of media
•    be original, explore concepts and develop ideas
•    improve skills, techniques and processes through regular practice
•    present their work for display and discussion
•    develop their own critical awareness and ability to analyse art works from the past and present
•    become aware of cultural diversity
•    appreciate the role of technological change

Having a purpose is often an important part of art making. All students’ work is valued and frequently placed on display for a period of time before taking it home. Art pieces will be on display in the Art Studio, Assembly Hall and Junior School Foyer throughout the year. Boys are also encouraged to display their work in the community.

Art Curriculum:

Prep
In Term Two, students will continue to use a variety of drawing materials to create individual pieces based on their personal experiences. They will also be introduced to clay and joining techniques used to create three-dimensional pieces. Awareness of different types of clay (natural and manmade) will be discussed and opportunities will be available to experiment with both. A number of pieces will be fired and displayed throughout sessions.  Preparations for a J.S.P.A. Auction piece will also be focused upon, using skills from the previous term.

Year 1
Boys will continue to explore the theme of Mini Beasts in Term Two. Inspired by Annemeike Mein’s work, students will use silk painting techniques, applying different colours to create a collaborative textile piece for the J.S.P.A. Art Auction. The classroom theme of The Body will be integrated into sessions by using simple printing methods of stamps, sponges and mono printing. Acrylic paints will also be incorporated, mixing them to create a variety of warm and cool colours.

Year 2
Students will look at pottery and glazing techniques during Term Two. Discussions and comparisons between Ancient Greek vessels and contemporary pieces by Vipoo Srivilasa will take place before students form their own pieces. Joining, manipulating clay shapes and applying glazes will be important parts of sessions. By the end of the term boys will have also contributed to collaborative pieces for the J.S.P.A auction.

Year 3
The Art program will use furniture as canvases in Term Two to produce a piece for the J.S.P.A Art Auction. Contemporary furniture and painting styles will be looked at for inspiration before boys decide how to collaboratively decorate the pieces through discussion, planning and finally, application. A range of paints will be used to apply line, shapes, pattern and colour to their imaginative designs. Three dimensional lighthouse sculptures will also be created during classes, integrated with the classroom theme.

Year 4
Inspired by Pamela Irving and Gaudi’s mosaic techniques, students will discuss and develop a design to decorate a three dimensional object. They will work collaboratively during sessions to produce imaginative pieces based on a theme chosen by the boys. Highlighted areas in sessions will include colour theory, shape, safe use of tools and gluing techniques for different substances. Some pieces will be displayed and be offered at the J.S.P.A auction later in the year for purchase.

Year 5
Studying styles of contemporary Art will be the focus during Term Two. Students will discuss and experiment with different painting styles before planning and creating a collaborative piece for the J.S.P.A. Auction. Acrylic paints will be overlapped and mixed before collaging materials over the designs. Three dimensional soft sculpture will also be studied during sessions before a small textile piece is create using felt and simple stitching techniques.

Year 6
In Term Two, students will discuss and view traditional craft practices from Kazakhstan and Mongolia before creating small individual samples. They will also design and work through a collaborative project to create a larger felt piece for the J.S.P.A’s auction. Colour, shape and texture will be highlighted during the exploration of three distinct felt making methods and boys will be encouraged to use other textile techniques to enhance their finished piece.
