Mission

To empower students to make informed decisions about their course and career pathways through provision of information, counselling and transferable skill development programs

Philosophy

Career education is a step by step process, life long decisions are not made at the end of Year 12. The first step for the majority of Scotch College students is choosing a course that interests them.

Aim of careers education at Scotch

All boys in Years 10, 11 and 12 are actively involved in Careers Education. The aim is to facilitate a boy's knowledge of career appointments and to make them more aware of their interests and abilities, so they are well equipped to make the transition from school to further study and the workplace.

Careers Night

Held in May of each year.

7.30 – 8.00pm Career Information Session 1
8.05 – 8.35pm Career Information Session 2
8.40 – 9.10pm Career Information Session 3

Parental support

The success of the programme depends to a large extent on the support of parents throughout the school. Parents are a valuable resource and their assistance is important to maintain and extend services provided. Any parent who thinks that they may be able to make a contribution to Careers Night, the Mock Interview Program or Work Experience is encouraged to contact the Careers Department.

Work experience

Conducted during the year and can include term holidays. Work experience is not legally permitted during the end of year summer holiday. It is the students' responsibility to organise a work experience placement. The Careers Department can offer advice on how to apply for work experience.

Year 10 students complete a week of work experience.

Mock Interview Programme

This involves boys in Year 11 and 12. Students are interviewed as either 'prospective employees' or for course entry for which a critique is provided to each student. This has excellent benefits for students' prospects of full or part time work and also provides useful practice for interviews in which students may be involved when seeking tertiary or TAFE selection. Follow up interviews include the opportunity of videotaping and analysis.
