For many Scotch parents – both new and not so new – the sheer range of activities available might seem daunting. But as a community, we are indeed fortunate to have so many things to offer our boys.
Becoming involved in the school life is an excellent way of sharing the learning and development that is part of the Scotch experience. Family Day in October evolves around the House and Form Athletics Day. The various parent support groups and auxiliaries have a presence around the Main Oval and welcome all enquiries and offers of help.
Family Day provides an opportunity for boys and parents to check out what activities might interest them immediately or later in their time at school. Whether they be rowing or rugby or pipes and drums, there are support groups and auxiliaries for a great number of Scotch activities. Involvement also facilitates such things as car-pooling, sharing pick-ups and drop-offs, and other essentials.
Encouraging and supporting your boys’ activities and getting to know staff and coaches in a relaxed and social way enhances the all-to-brief contact we have with formal parent teacher interchange. We look forward to meeting and greeting all parents at Family Day.
By further example, on a recent Saturday night the Music Auxiliary, together with the Music School, hosted the Annual Chamber Music Concert and Dinner. Advertised as ‘a wonderful opportunity to meet with friends, enjoy good music fine food and support our boys in their artistic achievement’, it was certainly all of that. A night to remember, and congratulations and thank you to all who contributed to a fabulous evening.
As Winter Term activities draw to a close, it is pleasing to note success in many areas. Five of our debating teams have reached their finals. In football, Scotch was equal first with Haileybury and Geelong College, the boys also bringing home the Cordner-Eggleston Cup. Scotch were ASRU premiers after defeating the powerful St Kevin’s team 11-10 in the grand final. In hockey, soccer, basketball and cross country, all teams performed well and were well up in the rankings. Congratulations to all teams, coaches and the parent groups that supported them.
