Excellence of spirit and President’s Column
spirit of excellence

September 2008 September 2008

In just over a day I was lucky enough to attend both the Cordner-Eggleston Cup and the George Logie-Smith Chamber Music Concert and Dinner.

At the Cordner-Eggleston Cup, Scotch College and Melbourne Grammar celebrated 150 years of Aussie Rules rivalry. Each end of the MCG was a mass of tribal colour, flags, drums and chants, which spoke of the spirit within each school. There is a great respect for the special relationship Scotch shares with Melbourne Grammar in this event that is shared by parents and Old Boys in the grandstands, and most importantly by the boys on the ground. Congratulations to the players, OSCA and the 1858 Club in staging such a memorable event.

At the Chamber Music Concert we were treated to a night of brilliant ensemble performances. With excellence comes Scotch spirit and as the boys finished they applauded the performances of others from the balconies. The Foundation Day Concert and Jazz Cabaret are around the corner as Director of Music, John Ferguson and Sheila Lamont-Stacey with the Music Auxiliary, continue to vary the style and manner of our enjoyment of Scotch Music.

A theme for all of our Auxiliaries and Year Level Representatives is inclusiveness. Functions vary their times, cost and venue with an aim of allowing all to have an opportunity to join in the Scotch Community.

As Term 3 draws to a close, spare a thought for the parents of boys undertaking VCE folio subjects of Visual Communication and Design Technology. It is amazing such creativity emerges through the rigour of deadlines. At Family Day we have the opportunity to view their work as part of a display of creative design at Scotch. This year the Departments of Visual Communication and Design Technology have created the Family Day Design and Technology Exhibition 'cre8' to be held in the David Yu Family Foyer of the James Forbes Academy. It is not to be missed! Family Day and cre8. Spirit and excellence - a synergy.

I wish you and your families a happy Term break.
