Saturday morning saw the parents and players of the Scotch 2nd, 1sts and Year 9A make the trip to the State Hockey Centre to play their away games against Xavier. For the 1st XI this was the big one, as Xavier is the team to beat this year. Xavier’s strong team with a couple of exceptional players and the added speed of the fast water-base surface made this a great challenge for the boys
The game opened well for both teams with play moving quickly to both ends, but a score was soon registered by Xavier after some confusion in the D. A relatively soft ball slid past our unsighted keeper. Colin White the coach and John Flynn as Teacher in charge continued to provide great verbal support for the boys and Scotch took the game up to the black and reds. Xavier’s star players helped to turn around our attacks. At half time the score was 2-0, but the Scotch defence had repelled a great number of shots including a great save by the keeper against a lighting fast flick.
Second half brought more of the same, but a Scotch sortie made it to the D and the our first (and only) goal was hit strongly. At 4-1 as the final whistle went, Scotch found itself second on the ladder. All in all, a great game well fought by both teams, but Xavier showed their superiority on the day.
