Scrum Club - Rugby at Scotch

Scrum Logo

Welcome to the Scrum Club family in 2012, the parents support group for promoting and supporting Rugby at Scotch.

Scrum Club would like to thank Jon Ryan, teacher in charge of rugby at Scotch, for his invaluable contribution in 2011 and we look forward to working with Jon to grow & improve Scotch Rugby in 2012!

The future of Scotch Rugby definitely looks promising with 12 Scotchies selected for the various VSRU representative sides in 2011, 2 Scotchies selected for the 2011 VRU U14 Rep team which toured Toowoomba and competed very well, the Scotch 2nd XV winning the 2011 grand final and the year 8’s completing yet another season undefeated!

Congratulations to Chris Garner and Andreas Livadaras for being invited by the VRU to play in an U16 VRU President's side versus the U17 Sunnybank Brisbane team on Sunday 6th May at Melbourne Rugby Club. It was a tough and gruelling encounter, both boys played well and stood tall.

The VRU team won by 4 tries to 1 and pretty much controlled the game from start to finish. It is becoming apparent that the poor cousins “South of the Border” are bridging the Rugby Chasm that once existed between Victoria and NSW/QLD!

South of the Border Flyer

Talking about “South of the Border”, don’t miss our upcoming function on the 2nd June! This is always a FUN night and a great social event in our rugby calendar.

Rugby Training Camp

The rugby Training Camp was a great success. James O’Connor interacted well with the boys and has undertaken to join a number of Scotch training sessions over the 2012 season.

Welcome function

The Welcome Function was a great night of rugby banter and thin crusted pizza! The record crowd of over 200 guests enjoyed Jim Richard’s Q&A with Mitch Inman and we are grateful to Ross & Christine Oakley for joining us on the night.

Barbecues: During home matches we supply a complimentary drink and sausage for every player, from both Scotch & the opposing team.  This is a great starting place to get involved by helping and allowing you to get to know other Scotch parents in the same and other Year Levels.

80th Anniversary Dinner Function

This year we celebrate the 80th anniversary of the first recorded rugby game in Victoria, between Scotch and Melbourne Grammar.  To commemorate this a combined dinner for the boys & current & past parents & old boys of both schools is being organised for Thursday 14th June at Kooyong Tennis Club.

Presentation Night

Presentation Night will be held on Wednesday 22nd August at the James Forbes Academy & this will conclude the season with awards for each year group.

Merchandise

The Scrum Club has a selection of supporter and player merchandise for sale http://www.scotch.vic.edu.au/family/scrum/merch.htm.

Fundraising

The Scrum Club raises funds to support a full scope of rugby activities at Scotch.  These have included:

  • assistance with capital works on or around the rugby field, as well as equipment;
  • assistance with coaching and physiotherapy; and
  • the sponsorship of touring teams.

The Scrum Club had tremendous support from the Scotch Rugby families with membership numbers having increased in 2011. Once again a warm invitation is extended to all Rugby families to join the Scrum Club (Membership Application Form). The annual fee of $50 per family enables the Scrum Club to support Rugby at Scotch in a wide variety of ways:

· encouraging boys to achieve their full potential both as players and individuals,

· raising funds,

· organising events that unite the Scotch Rugby community,

· encouraging communication within Rugby organisations and the wider community, and

· promoting the good image of Rugby within and outside the Scotch community.

We do this by subsidising clinics and tours, facilitating specialist coaching, donating equipment, arranging tickets to international rugby events when & where possible, producing branded garments and signage for the boys, and by providing free sausages and drinks to all Scotch and opposition players at the conclusion of home games.

With our beloved game, the one they play in heaven, now having a permanent home in Melbourne http://www.melbournerebels.com.au, Scotch Rugby is fortunate to have James O’Connor http://www.melbournerebels.com.au/Team/Player/tabid/297/playerid/36/Default.aspx and Lawrie Weeks http://www.melbournerebels.com.au/Team/Player/tabid/297/playerid/24/Default.aspx assigned to it.

This is part of the Rebels commitment to “grass roots” rugby in Melbourne and their 5 star Engagement Program http://www.melbournerebels.com.au/Community/5StarEngagementProgram.aspx.

If you haven’t joined as a Rebels member for 2012 we encourage you to do so, AAMI Park, “the Stockade”, is a great stadium and provides an electrifying atmosphere of Rugby.

Regular pre season training has commenced at Scotch for the year 10’s, 11’s & 12’s. Scotch Rugby Boys, across all year levels should consider joining a local rugby club and get involved in their pre-season programs.

· Boroondara Rugby Club http://www.boroondararugby.com.au,

Photos from Pre-season Rugby Camp and Welcome Function

The Pre Season Camp was a great success with some 80 Boys, 8 coaches, a dozen or so mothers and more sausages than one could get at a ‘Wurst Haus’ Laurie Wicks was also in attendance in the afternoon of the 1st day to spend some time with both groups of Boys.

Unfortunately the ‘heavens opened’on day 2 and the Camp had to be cancelled!
