Six young Scotch percussionists have shown outstanding musicianship in winning their section of the Australian Percussion Eisteddfod, held in Sydney during August.
It was an excellent follow-up to the success of our senior boys in last year’s eisteddfod.
This year, six young percussionists flew to Sydney to participate in the junior high sections of the eisteddfod. The boys – David Dower, Matt Pierri, Tom Wilson, Edward Cliff, Jason Huang and Cliff Wong – showed commendable integrity and great humility when they were announced as the national winners in the junior high ensemble section. The adjudicator praised the boys’ outstanding teamwork, musicianship and commitment to the performance.
As well, the boys obtained places in nearly all the individual sections they entered. David Dower won two second-place trophies in the drum kit and four-mallet solo sections. Edward Cliff also won two trophies: third in the two-mallet solo and second in the duet section, with Jason Huang. Cliff Wong received an encouragement award in the two-mallet solo section.
The boys were joined by two MLC Melbourne girls, Chloe Dempsey and Harriet Bawden, and earned another second-place prize in the combined ensemble. This included a piece written for the competition by David Dower which was very well received.
Congratulations to all these boys on their wonderful achievements, which are testament to their commitment and hard work.
