Scotch’s new link with the 9th Division
About 18 months ago, the Shrine of Remembrance Trustees suggested that World War II army unit associations – who, with the passage of time were becoming low in numbers – might consider forming links with local schools. The aim would be to perpetuate the knowledge of the units’ histories and battle honours.
The 9th Division Council in Victoria suggested that a liaison between the 9th Division and Scotch was appropriate, particularly as Scotch has a strong cadet corps, and can point to an impressive war service record by its Old Boys. In addition, Scotch’s Senior History Master, Dr Mark Johnston, is the author of two magnificent books about the 9th Division’s exploits.
With the help of Dr Johnston, this proposal was put to the Principal, Dr Gordon Donaldson, who enthusiastically endorsed it. The banner was presented to the School at the Remembrance Day service on 10 November, being funded by several Old Boys, including Eddie Cohen (’30) and Hugh Melville (’41).
It is envisaged that the banner will lead the remnants of the divisional units in Anzac Day marches, and that Scotch will display the flag and banner on appropriate occasions. It will also provide a permanent reminder to the School of the 9th Division’s exploits.
