Concordis, Old Scotch Music’s young adult chamber choir, has received nationwide recognition by achieving second place in the national adult category of Australia’s largest-ever choral competition.
It was an incredible achievement, which placed the choir firmly in the national spotlight as one of the finest ensembles in the country.
The ABC Classic FM Choir of the Year is the country’s largest choral competition attracting 7000 singers from more than 250 youth and adult choirs. The top 41 choirs were chosen to sing in six state finals held during July and August. From these, judges selected the best three youth choirs and best three adult choirs to compete in the national final in Sydney.
Concordis was thrilled to be selected for the national final, staged at the City Recital Hall in Sydney on 30 September. The final was broadcast live around the country on ABC Classic FM, and around the globe via the ABC website. Hosts Damien Beaumont and Mairi Nicolson introduced the final six choirs, which came from NSW, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria.
Concordis gave a stellar performance, received with huge applause by the sellout audience (which included Dr and Mrs Donaldson).
The weekend was frantic, including a reception at the ABC’s national broadcast centre, radio sound checks and interviews, as well as final interviews with the TV crew that had been filming them in rehearsal at Scotch the previous week.
Formed in 1998 and now based in the James Forbes Academy, Concordis is a mixed-voice choir for young adults involving a large number of young old boys in its tenor and bass sections. Congratulations to Chris Anderson, Aleksy Bialecki, Matthew Cameron, Edwin Chow, Toby Cooper, Alex Davie, David Heaton, Adam Kastoras, Michael Keks, Andrew Loh, Andrew Moffat, Guy Mylecharane, Joshua Tee, Michael Wang, as well as assistant director Nicholas Buc for their part in this huge success.
