The Council of Scotch College has the responsibility, first, to ensure that the School meets its educational and other objectives and purposes; and second, to manage the financial affairs of the School including its real estate and other property.
It is vital that the composition of the School Council includes people with an extensive range of skills, interests and experience, and a variety of professional and educational backgrounds, which are required in order to exercise its responsibilities. The Council is particularly conscious of this need in identifying the seven people which it nominates for approval by the Presbyterian Church of Victoria each year.
The Council comprises 17 people who are appointed each year for the 12 months commencing 1 November. Council members are appointed in the following manner:
As a matter of practice and courtesy, the Old Scotch Collegians’ Association has always consulted with the Chairman of the School Council in connection with identifying the five Council members which it selects. In its recent new appointments, the Church also has consulted with the Chairman. As a consequence of these practices, the Council is in a strong position to provide for the ongoing good governance of the School.
