The Scotch College First XVIII shared the 2006 APS Football Premiership with Geelong College and Haileybury College, after losing just one match in the School’s best football result in 10 years.
The team was undefeated until the final round, but lost to Haileybury despite holding a four-goal lead at quarter time. Sadly the boys were overrun in the last quarter, which saw us share the premiership, a result determined by a redraw system used for the first time in 2006.
Coaches Steve Holding, Chris Appel and Mick Smith moulded a close-knit team which earned praise for the exciting football it played. It is worth noting that Scotch was the best performed team for the season.
After the Cordner-Eggleston Cup match on Friday 11 August, Brownlow medallist and Old Melburnian Dr Donald Cordner remarked that the team played some of the best schoolboy football he had ever seen. Consistent performers included Captain Nick Smith, Scott Sherwen, Caillin O’Shannessy, Tristan Burnett, Nick Marks, Nathan Djerrkura and Junior Rioli.
