Scotch College

A great night of pride in achievement

Addressing the Scotch College Army Cadet Unit Tattoo on Friday 9 November, Lt Colonel Ian Teague (’52) told the cadets, officers and Scotch Family members present that the tattoo showed what can be achieved with cadet training and service.

‘This parade reflects the huge commitment each cadet makes to the unit, and you can all take great pride in your achievement,’ Lt Colonel Teague said.

He recalled that 55 years before, as a member of the Scotch College Cadet Unit, he had paraded on the Main Oval for what was then called the Remembrance Day Parade.

‘My four years of cadet service reinforced my ambition to join the Australian Defence Force, and launched me into a 30-year career of service in the Australian Army, and the opportunity to become a member of the revered SAS Regiment.’

Lt Col Teague said 2007 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the formation of the Special Air Service Regiment in the Australian Army, and that Scotch has had long-held links with the Victorian Branch of the SAS, which the School honoured at the tattoo.

He reflected on the qualities Scotch College has in common with this elite army unit.

‘The requirements of achievement and excellence which produce the outstanding military person, are reflected in the qualities and philosophies with which Scotch College strives to equip its students for successful endeavour, in whatever discipline or service they choose to direct their future lives.

‘Perhaps only a small number of young men parading tonight will follow a military career, but the opportunities enjoyed as part of this esteemed college, and the training experienced as a member of the Scotch College Cadet Unit, will foster a firm understanding of the value and privilege of being part of these disciplines.’

Concluding his address, Lt Col Teague had a special message for cadets about to leave Scotch. ‘Go well on your life journey, secure in the knowledge that your time spent at Scotch College will remain with you as one of life’s great privileges.’ GS
