‘He was a loyal friend and a hard worker. He was a great person to be around who thought of others before thinking of himself.’

The Scotch Family was deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic death of Nathan Francis, aged 131/2, on Friday 30 March while on the annual cadet bivouac. Nathan was a quiet, yet very perceptive member of Year 9 who was actively engaged in the School’s program.
In 2006 Nathan represented the School in tennis and soccer. He also competed in inter-form competitions. He was an enthusiastic musician and was a member of the Intermediate Band, performing at the Autumn Concert.
Nathan was a very generous young man who last year supported the Year 8 Pizza Days, which raised funds for Ronald McDonald House. He also supported the 40-Hour Famine – his efforts being recognised with an award.
In the classroom, Nathan was an attentive and enthusiastic student, often sitting in the front row from where he made useful and insightful contributions. He was diligent and well organised and assisted those around him.
At Nathan’s memorial service, held in the Scotch College Memorial Hall on Thursday 5 April, his classmates Harrison Sloane and Nicky Bristow and friend Ian Goodison paid tribute to Nathan, reflecting on the happy times that they had shared. They talked of a boy who loved life and lived life to the full. ‘He was a loyal friend and a hard worker. He was a great person to be around who thought of others before thinking of himself.’ Ian recalled how his mother would remark after Nathan’s visits ‘I hope that you are as polite as Nathan is when you are out.’ It was Nathan’s love of his family that was possibly his most endearing feature. His mother, Jessica, remarked that Nathan never tired of telling his family how much he loved them. Nathan’s father, Brian, fondly recalled his final game of tennis with Nathan and reminded all parents and children present at the service to always endeavour to make the most of their time together.
The School Community extends its sincere condolences to Brian, Jessica, Justin (Year 6) and the entire Francis family, as well as those who were privileged enough to know this fine young man.
