Scotch’s hold on the Hendry Prior Cup – the trophy up for grabs in an annual match between Old Scotch and Old Geelong Grammarians – was brief. A solid win in 2006 was quickly forgotten, as Old Geelong ripped through the Old Scotch middle order during this year’s game at Scotch on 25 March.
Bowling first, we did well to restrict the Geelong Grammar team to 205 from their allotted 40 overs (Tim Shearer 3 for 42, Tyson Yeo 2 for 28 and Nick Spargo 2 for 20). In reply, Old Scotch was cruising at 2 for 110 after 24 overs.
We then proceeded to lose four wickets for three runs. Andrew Penman, Hugh Sinclair, Nick Spargo and Tyson Yeo joined the flock of ducks that popped over the levy bank from Gardiners Creek! Dylan Best overcame a slow start and batted superbly for 67 runs, Ollie Crane made a very solid 35 and Year 10 student Stuart McKnight made a very good 25 not out. Next year’s match will be played at Geelong Grammar where we hope to reclaim the trophy.
