Fine art has recently emerged as a safe haven for blue-chip investors.
Words: ASTRIDA COOPER – ACTING DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT
Fine art, once an investment option almost exclusively for the rich and famous, has recently emerged as a safe haven for blue-chip investors. This trend has gained momentum during a period of sharemarket and financial volatility.
Major auction houses have recorded 60 per cent increases in turnover during the past year. National art sales jumped from $106 million in 2006 to $171 million in 2007, and a similar rise in 2008 is expected, based on first quarter results.
The current sharemarket downturn has not affected the art market, with most art collectors holding onto their works. The art market remains stable, with strong growth potential.
In fact, the demand for quality art is higher than ever, and it remains a lucrative investment with its historical significance, visual appeal and record of growth. In addition, art can be easily transported and sold in any market to get the best return. It is also an investment you can take home, see, touch, hold and enjoy.
The Scotch College Fine Art Exhibition (Saturday 15 November) and Auction (Sunday 16 November) in the James Forbes Academy at Scotch, are excellent opportunities to obtain quality art by Australia’s leading artists. Some of the names featuring in the sale are Brett Whiteley, Sir Sidney Nolan, Norman Lindsay, Sir Russell Drysdale, Charles Blackman, Sir William Dobell, Arthur Boyd, David Boyd, Pro Hart, Sir Arthur Streeton, John Perceval, Rick Amor and many others.
Cocktail parties scheduled for Monday 1 September and Tuesday 28 October will feature talks by the principal of Artpreciation and art investment adviser Barry Pang, and the head auctioneer at Deutscher and Hacket Fine Art Auctions, art expert Anita Archer. The pair will talk on art investing, while attendees enjoy drinks and finger foods. There will also be time for socialising and an exhibition of a private collection. Barry and Anita will also be happy to answer any queries.
More information regarding the above events can be obtained by calling Rebecca Mortimer on 9810 4304.The catalogue for the exhibition and auction will be placed on the Scotch website, www.scotch.vic.edu.au, early in November. Invitations will be posted to all Foundation members and other interested members of the Scotch Family. GS
