Alec ‘Tiger’ Lyne (’28) has had a long association with Scotch, dating from when he began as a Scotch student in 1924.
Alec completed his education most meritoriously, as the winner of the Argus Prize in 1928, when he was Dux of the School. After completing a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Melbourne in 1932, Alec embarked on a long teaching career first at Brighton Grammar School, and then at Scotch from 1942 until his retirement in 1974. Many past students fondly remember Tiger for his geography teaching, as well for his long-term involvement in drama at Scotch.
Now aged 98, Alec has recently completed his autobiography. He looks back over his long and productive life with an impressive command of detail, and with a deft turn of phrase that makes the memoirs a pleasure to read, as former Principal Dr Gordon Donaldson notes in the foreword.
If you would like more details on Alec’s autobiography please contact the Scotch Development Office on 9810 4300.
Footnote: Alec Lyne was the guest of honour at Scotch’s Anzac Day service on Thursday 24 April, when the refurbished World War I memorial tablets were rededicated in the Memorial Hall. Funds for installing the tablets were raised through drama productions at Scotch in the 1940s during Alec’s time as teacher in charge of the Scotch Dramatic Society.
