John Macadam taught science at Scotch from 1855–65 (while also, variously, an umpire in the first Melbourne Grammar/Scotch football match, secretary of the Burke and Wills Exploration Committee, and Postmaster-General of Victoria). Through his interest in plants and explorations he knew Ferdinand von Mueller, director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, who named this native Australian nut in Macadam’s honour.
