Members of the Scotch Family have the opportunity this year to nominate an Old Boy to win the prestigious Perelberg Award.
To commemorate the life of Ashley Perelberg (’92), who tragically died at the age of 18, the Perelberg family endowed an award to be presented annually to a member of the Scotch community who demonstrates the true Scotch spirit, and who by his deeds, brings honour to the School and service to the community.
The award is perpetuated in a significant work of art in sterling silver, displayed in the Lithgow Centre. A replica of a portion of the award, also in silver, is presented to each year’s winner on Speech Night.
The award is presented in alternate years to either a student of Scotch or an Old Boy. The 1993 winner was schoolboy Sam Hume; Teruma Naito won the award in 1995, Andrew Simm in 1997, Paul Greening in 1999, Nick Demiris in 2001, James Barton in 2003, Andrew Pyman in 2005 and Harry Hookey in 2007.
The inaugural award to an Old Boy went to Hugh Taylor (’64) in 1994. In 1996 it was won by Ian Stapleton (’67), in 1998 by Rob Moodie (’70), in 2000 by David Pennington (’83), in 2003 by Professor Colin Norman (’65), in 2004 by Simon Illingworth (’85) and in 2006 by Dr Ian Porter (’74).
Nominations are sought of an Old Boy who has contributed significantly to the physical, moral, spiritual or actual welfare of theirs or another community; or who has provided significant service to the School; or who has committed an act of bravery in the service of others, and through this, or in some other way, has demonstrated the ‘true Scotch spirit’.
Nominations, which will be accepted from members of the Scotch Family and from the wider community, should be submitted on the form inserted in this edition of Great Scot. If space is insufficient on the form, please include additional pages. Submissions should be typewritten, and should include all information necessary to support the nomination.
Nominations will be accepted by the Principal’s secretary until 4pm on Friday 10 October 2008.
Nominations will be considered by a Perelberg Award committee, which will make recommendations to the Principal.
The Principal will have the final decision regarding the recipient of the award, and reserves the right to make no award if he deems that no sufficiently worthy nomination has been received.
Nominations should be directed to The Principal, Scotch College, Morrison Street, Hawthorn 3122. Any enquiries should be directed to the Principal’s Office on 9810 4321.
