Timothy Martin, Minh-Quan Nguyen, Matthew Pierri and Andy Wang each achieved the highest possible ENTER of 99.95, placing them in the top 0.05 per cent of VCE students in Victoria. Twenty-nine or 30 students out of a cohort of approximately 48,000 achieve this distinction. We asked each co-Dux to share a little about himself and to offer a brief word of advice to current year 12 boys.

Timothy Martin

Course enrolled in: Medicine/Surgery (Monash University). ‘I’m interested in this course because it allows me to work in the sciences and with people.’

What helped me in year 12: ‘It’s important to work hard, stay involved, have time to not think about anything.’

Most treasured memory of my final year at Scotch: ‘The war-cry after the Torch Ceremony. There was such a strong sense of unity and togetherness.’

One word to describe my final year: ‘Belonging’.

Matthew Pierri

Course enrolled in: Media and Communications (University of Melbourne). ‘I’m interested in this course because it allows me to keep up my languages and to be involved in the media, which is an influential part of life.’

What helped me in year 12: ‘It’s important to keep a balance and do a lot of different things.’

Most treasured memory of my final year at Scotch: ‘During the Torch Ceremony, singing the school songs. There was a strong sense of camaraderie; we were all together.’

One word to describe my final year: ‘Opportunities’.

Andy Wang

Course enrolled in: Commerce (University of Melbourne). ‘I’ve always been interested in business between Australia and China. It provides me an opportunity to travel and make the most of my ability to use languages.’

What helped me in year 12: ‘A supportive family, teachers and friends.’

Most treasured memory of my final year at Scotch: ‘The war-cry at the end, because we were together right to the end.’

One word to describe my final year: ‘Friendship’.

Minh-Quan Nguyen

Course enrolled in: Bachelor of Arts (University of Melbourne). ‘The BA provides flexibility in terms of which subjects and disciplines you can cover; there are no compulsory subjects. In addition to doing subjects in the areas for which you have a present curiosity – in my case, politics and economics – there is also the opportunity throughout the course to explore new areas and thus develop wider interests.’

What helped me in year 12: ‘Seeking advice. I found that teachers were always prepared to offer feedback or assistance. They play an invaluable role in learning and provide a means through which to measure your progress. Make sure that you’re frequently discussing things with your friends and other students.’

Most treasured memory of my final year at Scotch: ‘The highlight was probably the Foundation Day concert. It’s always a spectacular event, and for me the sense of occasion was magnified by the fact that it was our last one as students of the school.’

One word to describe my final year: ‘Optimism’. GS
