Words: JOCELYN PRIDE – HEAD OF LIBRARY, JUNIOR SCHOOL
The start of 2009 saw the beginning of a new era in the Junior School Harbig Library.
During the summer holidays, refurbishment of the entire two floors took place, with a carefully selected colour scheme, space-effective shelving and the creation of relaxation areas within the library. A mobile interactive whiteboard was installed in the upstairs area, together with a desk area for the boys.
However, the central focus of the library is the stunning dragon created by the whole school in the art room during 2008, who has finally found his home.
A competition to name the dragon was conducted during term one, with a large range of carefully researched names put forward for consideration. A shortlist was drawn up then the boys and staff voted for the final selection. Zingora, meaning ‘the protector’, was the most popular choice, and James Ferguson from 2C will go down in history as the ‘namer of the dragon’.
The boys have embraced the new-look library by participating wholeheartedly in lessons, lunchtime activities, puppet play, indoor games and, in particular, borrowing recent acquisitions. Promoting a passion for literature is the primary aim of any school library, and it is always a pleasure to see our boys interacting and talking about books. GS
