Words: Ms Keiron Jones – Head of Year
It is sometimes daunting for adults to move to a new job or a new office, or to move interstate or overseas. How much more daunting must it be to arrive as a new student at a new school? Different routines, unfamiliar buildings, lots of strange people.
Yet the boys who have commenced at Scotch this year have settled superbly, if the comments by a representative number are anything to go by. Whether boys have arrived from the next suburb or have moved from Asia or England, the overwhelming comment is that Scotch boys have made them feel welcome.
Stan Gaudion (Year 7, from Alexandra) describes Scotch as ‘very exciting, but easy to get lost because the campus is so big’. Ted Murchie (Year 7) likes ‘the tuckshop, the swimming pool, the diving board and the thought of the Year 7 camp’. In Year 8, Jack Wood (newly arrived from Sydney) is enjoying the languages, and Oliver Brock from Warrnambool says: ‘I’ve wanted to come here since grade 3. The teachers are strict but that’s good for me!’
Sam Hatty in Year 9 hails from Tocumwal and likes the Main Oval, the boarding rooms and the boarding food. Simon Hong (local, in Year 9) is enjoying the teachers and opportunities, and is pleased he hasn’t got lost yet! In Year 10, Hilson Tay has travelled from Malaysia, and commented favourably on the education system in Australia with the chance to engage in multiple activities here at Scotch. William Doherty in Year 11 comes from England. He likes the friendliness of the Scotch community, the academic program and the sports opportunities.
We welcome all new boys to Scotch College and trust their time here is fruitful, rewarding and enriching. They bring all their talents, personalities and potential, and this can only make Scotch an even better place to be. GS
