Scotch work experience allows exploration of passions

WORDS: STUART SIM – YEAR 10

All Year 10 Scotch boys are required to participate in a week of work experience in a field in which they are interested. For my work experience I was lucky enough to be placed at the Melbourne Football Club, which was organised by OSCA.

At the MFC I joined the commercial and community departments of the club. On my first day at the office in the MCG there was a fire drill so I was lucky enough to meet Dean Bailey (coach) and Chris Connolly (MFC Football Director) on my way to the evacuation point. During the first part of my week at the club I was able to gain knowledge of sponsorships on many different levels. I was shown not only how the MFC created its proposals, but also how it would pitch them to large corporations in the hope they would become club sponsors. The pitch included financial benefits from signage around the ground to branding on clothing apparel.

In the latter part of my week at the club I was helping out in the community department. At my time there I was able to go on trips with some of the players out to Casey - MFC’s new membership target area – to participate in some of the club’s community projects, specifically ‘Read Like a Demon’.

The whole experience really opened my eyes as to how broad industries – like football – really are. I encourage boys who will be participating in work experience in the future to take part in something they are passionate about doing, because you will most likely have a great time. GS
