This small blazer is in the archives and is different from others that we have, not only because of its tiny size or because it has black buttons, but because its machine-printed name-tag says ‘Heather Cat ....’ The rest of the name is cut off. Another, hand-written tag says ‘Hare’. We would welcome information about this blazer for our catalogue. Does anyone know who Heather may have been? In the photo, the blazer is displayed by current Year 2 student Benjamin Strang (2021).
As we saw in the last Great Scot, in April 1919 three newspapers sprang up to raise funds for the War Memorial in the wake of World War I. North House’s paper was called Cock o’ the North.
The name comes from the fine Scottish tune of the same name which honours Alexander Gordon, 4th Duke of Gordon, who was known as The Cock o’ the North and who in 1794 raised the Gordon Highlanders, whose tartan is that now worn by our cadet corps.
Unfortunately much more can be said about its title than about the newspaper itself, for although Cock o’ the North ran to several issues no copy is known to have survived.
