David Reid's Top CAT

During 1998 the Year Twelve Studio Arts students produced folios of a high standard, with all boys gaining a pass.

As the policy of the Art Department is to concentrate on computer graphics in this subject, all folios are centred on digital work. The boys combine the skills of photography and the manipulation of computer software to create and generate images. The ability to produce work in this manner is now central to this field, and the folio produced, provides the lads with a good chance to gain entry to a tertiary course.

At the end of the year, slides were sent into the National Gallery, showing the classes folio work. Four lads, Jonothan Mok, Daniel Juleff, Marcus Corr and David Reid were contacted by the selection committee and asked to bring in the actual pieces for review. Having work reviewed at this level is, in itself, an achievement, as only seventy four works were selected to represent the best in the State for 1998.

David Reid's piece made it through to final selection, and is currently on display in the Top Cats Show at the National Gallery. He has described the work for the catalogue in the following manner.

'The concept behind this piece was to create a new identity for the FX audio tape that communicated the high quality of its sound reproduction.

To communicate the 'realness' of the sound the audio cassette was represented in an audio/visual format. The visual part of the advertisement comprises spectacular scenes and special effects so that when the viewer reads the identity 'See the music', he/she will identify the dynamic visuals with the sound reproduction of the FX audio tape'.

The video was created using computer generated 3D models. The software used in production included Visual Reality, Extreme 3D, 3D Studio and Adobe Premier. The video was down loaded to a VHS video cassette on which the sound track was added.

David is now attending the City Campus of R.M.I.T, where he is studying a degree in Engineering and Electronic Communication.
