Cardinal breakfast support
Single ScullsWe are most grateful to the Club for its ongoing support of rowing. The Cardinal Club has served as a model for support groups within Scotch and at other schools. These new single sculls have been purchased for use by boys as they start their rowing career. They give a relatively stable platform and provide an opportunity for boys to develop their skills. We are pleased to acknowledge the contribution that members of the Cardinal Club have made, by naming two of the single sculls after former Presidents of the club, and two Old Scotch Collegians, who have continued to make a contribution to rowing.
Andrew SladenAndrew served two terms as President, while his sons rowed at Scotch. He did a wonderful job in many areas - twice hosted the Cardinal Cocktails. He ensured that the merchandising side of the club improved significantly and was a fine supporter of the school. Don CoveneyDon also served as a President of the Cardinal Club. He rowed at Melbourne High School and university. His son James was Captain of Rowing and his other son, Andrew, is currently in the 1st VIII. Tim WidmerTim was Captain of Rowing in 1997. Last year he rowed in the Melbourne University Boat Club coxless four, which won the Australian Junior Championships and finished 4th at the World Junior Rowing Championships in Greece. Tim's dedication and determination set a fine example to other young oarsmen. Simon MorrisonSimon rowed in the seven seat of the 1986 1st VIII and continued rowing at Mercantile Rowing Club. He represented Australia several times in lightweight crews. He is currently coaching the Mercantile youth VIII and coached last year's Victorian youth VIII which won the national title.
1999 school year up and runningWhen over fourteen hundred Scotch Collegians arrived for school on Friday 29 January, the campus was transformed from its summer tranquility to the sounds and rhythms of school life. 'We have a busy Administration Day and then it's straight down to business on our regular timetable,' commented Vice Principal, Mr Ian Savage. For such a vast and complex organisation, Scotch wastes no time in 'cranking up its engines' and by the end of the first day back, boys had met as tutor groups, houses, summer sport squads and in-service activities. And they had their timetables ready for regular classes on the following Monday. Behind the scenes the school is a hive of activity in the two weeks leading up to the start of the year as senior members of staff organise timetables and facilities so that the school can make an efficient and effective start to the year. 'We work very much as a team and the Computer Centre is pivotal to the success of our start to the year,' Mr Savage added. And it didn't take long for the school to be buzzing with news. Year 7 student Julian Deschepper took a hat trick in the first 7B cricket match against Wadhurst, while in the first eleven, bats were presented to William Elliott and Tim Hosking for their APS centuries. Scotch had certainly launched 1999 in a positive vein. Mr Bruce Brown, Head of Year 9
