Scotch College

Gentlemen, please start your engines!

Over the years there have been many Scotch identities who have loved motor racing, with Bib Stillwell the most famous of them all.

'Ned' Kelly and Ross McKinnon Most recently, Glenn Gilbert ('99) has raced at Bathurst. Me anwhile two Old Boys, David "Ned" Kelly ('55) and Ross McKinnon ('61), are deriving enormous enjoyment from their car racing hobby. Both had developed a love of sports cars from an early age, owning MGs and other marques, before they actually met as members of the Triumph Sports Owners Association, and TR Register some five years ago. Ross had been racing a Triumph TR3, but Ned was a relative newcomer to track racing.

After mulling over the possibilities of jointly acquiring a TR model, they settled for a TR7. The livery was refurbished and they had to choose a racing number which could be versatile enough to allow two drivers to use the same car. They selected number 37 as Ross had formally been number 3, and Ned's favourite number was 37, his year of birth and jumper number for Old Scotch! Another major decision was to paint their cherished Number 37 in cardinal, gold and blue.

The car has competed successfully in the 1500-2000 cc class at Winton, and most recently, in the Phillip Island Historic Race. And with any luck we shall all be able to see Number 37 and other Triumph Cars at Family Day in October.
