Mr Nick Browne, Head of Boarding and Assistant Scout Leader of 1st Hawthorn Scout Troop, was honoured in a special presentation held at Gilwell Park. He was awarded the Silver Wattle by Mr Brian Loton AC, Victorian President of Scouts Australia.
Nick has been involved all his life in the movement and has made Camberwell Showtime a major focus. The show is staged in Camberwell as the title suggests, and Scouts, Venturers and Rovers get together spending the year writing skits, practicing musical items, making costumes and building sets.
Last year our Troop had two boys take part, this year four lads are involved. It is a fabulous opportunity for our youth to express their creative talent to produce a show each year which is full of fast moving, song, dance and good humour.
This very professional production only happens through the work of a small band of leaders who show the way.
The Scout Troop held their annual hike at the start of this term and for a change headed seaward instead of into the hills. The walk started on Thursday 30 April , leaving School at lunchtime and travelling by bus to Cape Schank on the Mornington Peninsula. The boys camped at the Lighthouse site. After setting up their tents, the patrols visited the lighthouse and museum.
After a mild night, the troop walked as patrols along the coastal cliff tops pathway that lead to Bushrangers Bay. The beach at Bushrangers Bay is ringed by cliffs and Mr David Fryer who was the Scout Leader in Charge, selected this imposing site for the investiture ceremony of new scouts entering 1st Hawthorn Troop. From here the boys walked along Main Creek , through Highfields National Park to make camp at the Rosebud Motor Cross Track.
Next day saw the boys on the track again this time making their way through Greens Bush to Boneo Road top meet the bus and head home.
