Christian Bromley (Yr 12) was a member of the Victorian U18 state indoor hockey team which was undefeated in the national championships in Canberra on the Australia Day weekend, winning the grand final to take out the national title for 1998.
In January this year the 2nd X1 travelled to Brisbane to play a round of matches against Ormiston College and St Peters College.
This was the first time that a Scotch 2nd X1 had gone on tour, and it complemented the 1st X1 trip to Sydney. The tour was made following the invitation of former Scotch Vice Principal, Mr David Hosking, who arranged for the parents of Ormiston College to billet the Scotch boys.
The team, which won two out of three games consisted of Toby Mullen, James Beaurepaire, Nick Colman, Richard Craven, Simon Croxford, Ed Ellis, Edward Hooke, Robbie Josephs, Brett McIntosh, David Pryles, Struan Robertson, James Simon, Scott Tulloch and Matthew Walker.
The tour was not only a success for the games won, but also great experience for the team in staying with, and being part of, a host family. Team Coach Leigh McGregor was delighted at the improvement in the team's cricket.
Ormiston College has been invited to visit Scotch next year when we will have the opportunity to return their most generous hospitality.
More than 2000 Victorian students from 83 schools entered the recently inaugurated National History Challenge in 1997. Several boys from Scotch entered, and two of them enjoyed some success. Marcus
Doherty (Yr 9) won a regional prize in the category 'The Australian Experience of War', with an essay about the ordeal of his grandfather as a prisoner of war.
Alistair McComas, also in Yr 9, won a regional prize and the State prize in the category 'Promoting Reconciliation'. He did this with a research essay on the life of the Tasmanian Aborigine
Truganini. Alistair won a prize certificate from the organisers of the Challenge, and a cheque for $100 from the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation.
After a four year apprenticeship, working on the groundstaff, Dallas Lyons received his certificate of turf management on 4 January 1998. He will leave Scotch on March 27 to undertake 6 months study leave, following in the footsteps of Ashley Miller.
While Dallas is away he will work at Wimbledon, Dukes Golf Course, St Andrews, and the Scarborough Cricket Festival. He will return to Scotch in September this year.
