La Trobe Street, opposite Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology on a winter's morning at 9.15, can be a rather windswept bleak place.
On Wednesday, 25 July however, there was a throng of Year 8 art students busily drawing the wonderful rusticated facade of the Old Law Courts. The lads tucked themselves behind the pillars of the State Library to have a vantage point from which to sketch.
Four classes took part in the excursion, all heading for different locations. As Mr Taylor's group was recording the Law Courts for posterity; another class under the watchful eye of Mr Papuga headed into the Federation Exhibition in the National Gallery of Victoria. They were also taking careful note of the Greek pottery display. Each class was to undertake constructing a coil pot in ceramics when they returned to school, using symbols and decoration derived from the Greek red and black figure styles.
While two groups were busy at the La Trobe Street end of the city, the other two were split, one drawing at Southbank with Mr Lundie and the other looking at the totem pole display in the City Square with
Mr Mason. Mid morning both busloads swapped locations allowing all involved to experience a variety of things to draw as well as have the opportunity to view and discuss the National Gallery collection.
