Samuel Johnson (Class of 1751) wrote: 'A man seldom thinks with more earnestness of anything than he does of his dinner.'
That's certainly the case with the nationally renowned OSCA Dinner. In recent years, speakers Jean Kittson, Rod McGeoch, the Hon. Judge Gordon Lewis and Max Walker have memorably choked us with laughter and served up food for thought.
Our guest of honour on Friday 26 May 2000, John Burns ('Sir Lunchalot'), moonlights as the World's Best Barrister(tm). A conservative 39 stone, Lunchie is allegedly the son of Lady Beaucoup Repast and Sir Cumference. The mirthful, girthful author of "Good Food That is Bad For You" attended Melbourne Grammar (pardon the indigestion), winning the inaugural full blue in Tuckshop.
His wireless reviews of institutions purporting to serve food have been running since 1988, and he is heard on Monday mornings on 3AW's top-rating breakfast programme. John is a genuine gourmet delight for patrons young and old.
Principal chef Dr Gordon Donaldson will dish up his usual succulent entree, and a nutritious toast to the guests will be proposed by The Hon. Dr Michael Wooldridge ('73), Australia's Minister for Health since 1996 and himself an acknowledged expert on restaurant etiquette (such as whether a tip attracts GST).
In the splendid ambience of Melbourne Park, the bill of fare will also include our hearty haggis ceremony, piping hot Pipes and Drums, side-dishes of songs and fine Old Boy wines - all for $78, GST-free!
An application form is enclosed with this issue. As always, your hosts are particularly keen to find a table for those who've been off their food in recent years. Please direct any enquiries to maître d' Leigh McGregor or head waitress Lynley Nimmo at the OSCA office (03 9810 4302). Bookings are processed strictly in order of receipt of forms and cheques, and telephone or fax bookings will not be accepted.
Another mouth-watering feast of fantastic fellowship, festivity and fun is assured. And Sir Lunchie so advises!
