‘We’re off to Access!’ Educational Support Service

Access is the name used by the boys for the area officially known as Educational Support. This busy and dynamic learning environment, located off to the right of the Junior School Reception, is where you will normally find several small groups of boys working enthusiastically with one of the Access Team:

Mrs Christine Robertson, Mrs Jane Beams, Mr Brian Sampson, Mr Rodney McKinlay, Mr Ian Leith, Mr Peter Hawkins and Ms Marcia Bacon.

A great focus is placed on the individual learning needs of boys needing either consolidation or extension in numeracy and literacy.

Whether it be; the use of the catchy THRASS rap tape introducing the 'phonemes and graphemes' being trialed as an approach to spelling; tables being revised; lines for the latest video production being rehearsed; or enthusiastic discussion as to the best way to solve a challenging Maths problem - the boys are busy moving in and out.

The photographs above highlight just some of the many remedial/consolidation and extension programmes that offer support to over 300 boys in the Junior School.

1. The Day of Excellence - 'Ancient Times' offered thrilling and unusual activities for many Year 6 boys.

2. Two boys from Mrs. Beam's exciting Year 4 Video Production Team editing their own movies.

3. Mrs Robertson's programme - Guided Reading strategies with Junior Primary boys.

4. A lively group of Year 2 boys creating a Maths Talent Quest (MTQ) entry 'The Shape of Scotch' with Ms Bacon.

5. Year 5 and Year 6 Acceleration Maths group have great success in many challenging Mathematical competitions.
