Junior School Lighthouses

Year 4 painted themselves

Lighthouses have been a major topic for boys during Term 1 in the Junior School Art room. Boys in Year 3 have painted lighthouses and made a model of a lighthouse using papier mâché. Lighthouses are a major part of their class study. The boys enjoyed building a structure that would light up when completed with batteries and a small globe.

Boys in Years 1 to 6 worked as a team, over a number of weeks, to build a large model of a lighthouse from shoe boxes. The construction stands about 2 metres tall and is in the foyer of the Art room with a sea picture painted by the boys as a backdrop. The boys had to solve a number of construction problems when they had to build a round lighthouse shape from square boxes.

Year 4 boys painted themselves in school uniforms and learnt to master mixing primary colours to secondary colours. Year 3 enjoyed making Harry Potter glasses as a fun art activity. The Winter Olympics was also an exciting topic for painting during Term 1.

Anna Thompson

Anna to represent Australia at Games

Our Prep integration aide, Anna Thompson, pictured right, has recently been selected to represent Australia at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, which are to be held in Manchester between 25 July and 4 August.

Anna will compete in the 5000m after finishing third in the National Final earlier this year.

Since the trial, Anna finished fifteenth at the World Cross Country Championship held in Ireland which showed she is able to compete against the world's best.

Anna will leave for the U.K. in early July but before then faces some heavy weeks of training. A typical training week involves 110 km including nine to 10 training sessions and a race. At the moment Anna is competing in the Victorian Winter Cross Country season.

We wish her all the best.
