The school commemorated Anzac Day 2002 with a special School Assembly on Wednesday 24 April. The Assembly commenced with the singing of the National Anthem, and then the Principal introduced a guest to the school.
The special guest was Old Boy, Dr Maurice Gooey ('33). Maurie was a School Probationer, played First football and First cricket, and was Dux of the school. He graduated in medicine in 1939 and saw service in the AIF from 1941 - 1946, as a regimental medical officer. After the war Dr Gooey was in practice as a general practitioner in Parkdale.
The assembly included readings from letters sent from Gallipoli by Old Scotch Collegians. These readings were presented by students Sam Webb (school captain), Nicholas Cruickshank and Dylan Best. These three boys were members of the group who went on the 2001 history tour to Gallipolli and the Western Front.
The assembly concluded with a Silence and the playing of a lament by the Pipe Major (Sam Shields).
The next day, the ANZAC Day march to the Shrine of Remembrance saw a number of Scotch students participating. The Military Band and the Pipes and Drums provided musical accompaniment, and many Scotch cadets carried banners for various units.
After eighty-seven years, the spirit of ANZAC Day is still strong at Scotch.
