Top Arts 2003.

The "Top Arts, VCE 2002", Show opened on March 6th at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, Federation Square, and was on show until May 18th. It will now tour regional art galleries around Victoria. The exhibition showcases ninety-two individual works, selected from over three thousand entries. It is an honour to be represented amongst the state's most talented art students. Last year we had eight students' considered in the final two hundred works short-listed, and two VCE students' work made it into the final selection. Alistair Holmes has two of his digital computer generated art works on display, and Bhanuwat Jittivuthikan has an acrylic painting. Both boys are to be congratulated for having their work selected for the exhibition.

Year Twelve Studio Arts Study Tour: Sydney and Canberra, March 13th-15th.

At Brett Whiteleys studio

Year 12 boys in Brett Whiteley's Sydney studio

The Year Twelve Studio Arts class left for Sydney on Thursday morning March 13th travelling directly to Brett Whiteley's Studio in Surrey Hills. It was a very special feeling to be standing in this studio surrounded by huge paintings, hung amongst the artists' personal belongings and memorabilia. The group then visited the National Gallery of New South Wales to see an exhibition of that state's top Year 12 Art Students work, as well as the general collection. In all, seven public and private galleries were visited by Friday evening, when the group flew to Canberra. On the Saturday they went through the Australian National Gallery as well as the National War Memorial looking at the art collections. It was an inspiring trip that fired the boys' imaginations, and has proved highly motivational for their folio development.

Year Twelve Visual Communication and Design attend the A.G. Ideas Design Conference, March 25th-27th.

The class attended this Student International Design Conference, which was held at the Victorian Arts Centre over three days. The conference is co-ordinated by Ken Cato of Cato Design as a non-profit event to promote good design within the community. It is the largest student design conference in the world and was attended this year by over 2000 students. The program includes a visit to a design studio on the first evening. The line up of top designers who spoke at the conference was a breathtaking experience and one the lads will not forget. It will be of great assistance throughout the year with their VCE work.

Year Twelve Studio Arts Students meet Mr John Olsen, Australian artist, April 28th.

Robert Dumaresq, Ed Cronin, James Fenton, Tom Gaunt and Hugh Killminster accompanied by Head of Art, Mr Taylor, met with the famous Australian artist John Olsen at Metro 5 Gallery in High St, Armadale. Mr Olsen agreed to meet with a small number of students from various schools and let them see him complete the final painting to be shown in his current exhibition. It turned out that the Gallery allowed him to paint a large mural piece over the roof and wall. It was a special experience and very enlightening for the boys to hear first hand the artist explain his points of reference and motivation for the work.

Year Ten Art students visited the Bendigo Regional Gallery on the 14th of May, to view the huge computer inspired flower paintings of Australian artist, Tim Magire. The boys were impressed with the colourful images of flowers, enlarged and magnified to a huge scale. The permanent collection was inspiring and the remainder of the visit was spent photographing the magnificent Victorian architecture found in that City, in preparation for a practical unit in processing and printing black and white film. The Year Seven and Year Eight classes were taken to the Ian Potter Gallery at Federation Square during the semester. The sevens were also able to take in some drawing at the Exhibition Buildings in Carlton, while the Year Eight students drew the surrounding city scape of Flinders Street in preparation for a painting. Both Year Levels were given an introductory tour of the art work on display, with Gallery Officers explaining the concepts behind the images.
