Old Scotch Clubs relaunched

Old Scotch Collegians' Association's (OSCA) Affiliated Societies were relaunched as Old Scotch Clubs at an official gathering in the Fraser-Smith Theatre at Scotch on Monday 28th April.

Many of OSCA's Affiliated Societies were established back in the early 20th century and only catered for the needs of Old Boys of the School. In fact in many cases membership was formally restricted to Old Boys of the School. 2003 sees a very different social environment and the membership compositions of our Clubs has changed. Women are members of many of the Clubs, as are males from a non-Scotch background. This makes for a more diverse and broad membership base at our Clubs. The OSCA Council has resolved to rename the Affiliated Societies "Old Scotch Clubs" and each Club will be encouraged to formally rename itself. For example, The 'Old Scotch Collegians Football Club' will be renamed The 'Old Scotch Football Club' under this proposal. Specific criteria for affiliation still exist to ensure that the Scotch Family connection is maintained. For the first time it is hoped that non Old Boy members of the Old Scotch fraternity will be able to really feel part of these Clubs. In turn, this move will make each Club's membership base stronger and each club will be more relevant to modern day standards.

Clubs maintain their Scotch Family connection

Another development is that for the first time OSCA will be financially supporting these Clubs, as they are a key link between young Old Boys and the Association. This support will take the place of a sponsorship arrangement, where Clubs must meet specific targets in order to receive their sponsorship support. OSCA is prepared to assist those Clubs that are prepared to assist themselves.

Four new Clubs will be formed in 2003:

Old Scotch Past Parents Club

Old Scotch Past Parents Club

As already outlined in the article "We are Family", OSCA is looking to embrace all Past Parents of the School. After all, it is these people that make the decision to send their children to Scotch and make the emotional and financial commitment to help drive the auxiliaries whilst their children attend the School. Parents are an integral part of the Scotch Family and the Old Scotch network wants to embrace parents once their son's formal association with the School ends. A Past Parents membership package is being developed. Look for more details in the next edition of Great Scot.

Old Scotch Past Staff Club

This group already meets regularly on an informal basis but it is planned to formalise this particular (and magnificent!) membership category. Again, more details will be in the next edition of Great Scot.

Old Scotch Music and Drama Club

Old Scotch Music and Drama Club

As Stage 2 of the James Forbes Academy continues to progress, and with the depth of musical and dramatic talent that the School develops, it is an opportune time to develop the Old Scotch Music and Drama Club. This Club will operate at two levels - in a practical sense with the production of concerts, musicals, plays and various other performances, and in a supportive sense whereby professional past students can come back and support the School's music and drama programs.

Old Scotch Watersports Club

Old Scotch Watersports Club

It is hoped that the reincarnation of the Old Scotch Collegians' Swimming Club (see article in Archives section of this edition) as the Old Scotch Watersports Club will assist the School regain its supremacy in the swimming pool. The Club will provide assistance for the School swimming, diving and water polo programs as well as being an avenue for members of the Old Scotch fraternity to catch up and swim/dive/play together.

OSCAnet will be increasingly used to support all of the Old Scotch Clubs and their associated activities. Log on to www.oscanet.com.au for more information on all the Clubs.
