Scotch College

We have five in VCE top ten

On 4 April 1997, at a huge gathering at Government House, Melbourne, the Premier, Mr Jeffrey Kennett, together with the Governor of Victoria, Mr Richard McGarvie AC and numerous other dignitaries, acknowledged outstanding academic achievements of students in the 1996 Victorian Certificate of Education.

The criteria used to separate the top students were study scores and individual CAT scores.

The top ten students in the State were identified along with the best ten students in English and Mathematics, and the best five in the other subjects.

Scotch College was proudly represented by five students who gained six awards:

Jules Flynn, School Vice-Captain, 1996, was ranked fourth in the State and was awarded one of the ten Mathematics prizes.

Geoff Junkeer, Class of '96, was awarded one of the five prizes in International Studies.

Sina Mahjoob, Class of '97, was awarded one of the five prizes for Environmental Studies.

Yi-Ren Ng, Class of '97, was also awarded a Mathematics prize.

Jefferson Petch, Class of '96, was awarded one of the five prizes for Economics.

Our warmest congratulations go to each of these young men and to their families and teachers who helped develop their potential.

Sina Mahjoob, who is studying a number of subjects this year, may achieve further academic distinctions this year.

Unfortunately for Scotch, Yi-Ren Ng was recently been accepted into Stanford University at Palo Alto, California and will leave us in August to take up this place. This is an outstanding achievement and we offer him our warmest congratulations and best wishes as he embarks on his tertiary studies in this highly renowned institution.

Mr Neil Cracknell, Head of Year 12
