Scotch College

The Campbell McComas Scholarships

Campbell McComas

A full obituary on page 45 describes in detail the wonderful philanthropic contribution that Campbell McComas made to education in general, and Scotch College in particular. Without Campbell’s vision, drive and commitment the James Forbes Academy for Music, Drama and (importantly) the spoken word would never have eventuated. This is just one example of Campbell’s outstanding contribution to Scotch College.

Campbell died in January 2005 at the age of 52 after a short illness. The Campbell McComas Scholarships are being created to celebrate his life, his dedication to Scotch College, and his belief in the best – in facilities, opportunities and people. They are a recognition by friends, colleagues and admirers of a remarkable man, with an outstanding career, and an unquenchable belief in the goodness and generosity of the human spirit.

Each Campbell McComas Scholarship will be endowed to ensure it remains a perpetual scholarship. The funds will be invested with the Foundation Corpus. Investment returns will be used to fund the costs of tuition for each scholarship holder. The surplus from the returns will be added to the capital of the Campbell McComas Scholarship Fund to ensure capital growth of the endowment. Over time, therefore, the value of the scholarship will increase.

The Campbell McComas Scholarships are to be awarded to students at Scotch College who enter the School at either Year 7 or Year 9. They will be awarded at the discretion of the Principal under the guidelines of Scotch College. They will cover the tuition costs for each student until the completion of his studies in Year 12.

The scholarships are open to any applicant and are to be awarded to students who display outstanding academic ability, and who have a interest in and aptitude for English, oral literacy and drama. It is expected that each recipient will participate in drama at Scotch College.

A sum of $300,000 is required to establish each Campbell McComas Scholarship.

The first Campbell McComas Scholarship has been launched and covered by pledges from his friends, colleagues and admirers. It will be awarded in 2007.
