On Friday 11 June the Junior School celebrated its Language Other Than English (LOTE) day. The whole day was devoted to finding out more about the German language and culture, and to engage not only in fun, but also educational activities.
Dr Donaldson and other guests from the Senior School joined us for the special morning assembly, which included a performance of the story Die Landmaus und die Stadtmaus (The Country Mouse and the City Mouse).
Part of this performance was the traditional Schaefflertanz, a dance introduced by the Barrel Makers’ Guild of Bavaria during the Middle Ages, to lure the people back out onto the streets after the terrible Black Plague. Sixteen boys practised for weeks to showcase this dance, incorporating many intricate patterns with garlands and a unique hopping step.
Another highlight for the boys, parents and staff was the delicious German lunch, with a selection of yummy desserts. It gave everyone a real “taste” of Germany.
Our German Performance Group has since had the opportunity to showcase their skills at the famous Cuckoo Restaurant in the Dandenongs, and their efforts were rewarded with a delicious smorgasbord.
