John Au with his award

James Drummond and Andrew Prowse
also won a prize for their essays.
The setting was a ballroom in Lygon Street, North Carlton, and it was packed with government officials, officials from the Chinese Consulate in Melbourne, leaders of the Chinese community and guests from various Chinese organisations.

But they weren't there to brush up on their ballroom dancing techniques! Rather, they had gathered for the second Chinese Essay Competition Award night organised by the well-known Chinese newspaper, The Pacific Times.

More than 200 students of Chinese from various schools around Melbourne participated in the competition at the end of last year, with six of the students from Scotch College. The essay Live with Aussies by current Year 10 student John Au in the L1 Chinese class at Scotch won second prize in the Chinese background category. Fellow Year 10 students James Drummond and Andrew Prowse from the L2 Chinese class won a special prize for their essay Sports in Australia.

All their essays were published in The Pacific Times.

Reach for the stars

The Astronomy Club is back in town. Students from various year levels have aided in the refurbishment of the Scotch College Observatory, converting the area into a classroom setting for all to utilise and experience the beauty and valuable contribution astronomy makes to our everyday lives.

The Astronomy Club caters for all students who have a fascination for the wonders of space and beyond. Presently, boys are involved in a number of activities, including constructing a telescope and learning about its operation. This telescope will enable the vision of stellar objects up to 1000 X magnification.

If you would like to become involved in the Astronomy Club please contact Grace Cardaci on 9810 4321 or Sophie Musci on 9810 4407, who have a galaxy of information at their fingertips.
