Commitment and passion in Design and Technology

Michael Aylett made this Asian-style entertainment
cabinet to match his parents’
existing furniture. He used Victorian ash
which he distressed and stained.

Commitment and passion in Design and Technology This year’s senior Design and Technology class has produced some magnificent prize-winning project work, continuing the short but rich Scotch tradition in this subject at VCE level. (There has been a VCE class since 2000.) The work illustrated on this page is evidence of the commitment and passion the senior class has devoted to their designing and manufacturing. It was displayed in the department on Family Day and in the Lithgow Centre foyer earlier, earning accolades from the parents and friends passing through. Scott Mortimore and Jack McIlwraith, boarders from Yarrawonga and Alexandra respectively, entered the student competition at the Timber and Working with Wood Show, held at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre over the weekend of 15 to 17 October. Scott won first prize of $500 for his beautiful four-poster bed, and Jack won third prize of $50 for his country bar project. The school community congratulates these young men on their fine achievements. J P FLYNN Head of Design and Technology Department

Christopher Aitken designed and made this stylish coffee table with in-built chessboard from jarrah and mahogany.
Chris Tyas of Year 11 fabricated this most beautiful poolside lounge chair from stainless steel for his parents. He learned how to TIG weld (a most difficult skill) and executed his design to a superb standard.
Alex Jackson fabricated this tough and durable tool box from mild steel for his Valiant utility. Alex has a small business for which he needed a secure toolbox.
Jack McIlwraith built this large and magnificent piece of furniture for his parents’ new country home. He made extensive use of river redgum native to his parents' property, and used other recycled and new materials to fine effect.
Scott Mortimore designed and made a stunning four-poster bed from messmate native hardwood. He successfully completed a high-quality task that would be daunting even for the most experienced of adults.
