A captivating game in front of an electric Main Oval crowd.
On 24 May 2024, the Scotch College 1st XVIII played Melbourne Grammar School in the annual Cordner-Eggleston Cup game. This match marked the 183rd game between the two schools, dating back to the first recorded and recognisable game of Australian Rules football in 1858.
The Main Oval was in pristine condition, and the many spectators were entertained by Year 5 and 6 students playing in the curtain raiser game, as well as a fantastic Indigenous ceremony from the 12 First Nations Scotch students for Reconciliation Round.
Scotch started well in the first quarter, yet failed to convert in front of goal, kicking 3.7.28 to 0.2.2. In the next three quarters, both sides wrestled with the momentum. Melbourne Grammar School stormed home in the last quarter, kicking seven goals to three, including a goal after the siren to win the game. The final scoreboard read Scotch College 9.19.73 to Melbourne Grammar School 12.3.75.
The game was a great representation of APS football, with both teams keeping the huge crowd enthralled throughout the match with their effort and skills.
Whilst Scotch players were incredibly disappointed to lose, we were all extremely grateful to be a part of the historic game. The support from students and teachers at Scotch was incredible, and the atmosphere at the Main Oval made the game a highlight of the Scotch football journey for all those involved.
